JMU Upends Old Dominion 4-3 in Comeback Victory

NORFOLK, Va. – Senior Timea Guibe capped the James Madison women's tennis comeback on Sunday with a three-set tiebreak victory at No. 1 singles to clinch the Dukes' 4-3 triumph at Old Dominion in the regular-season finale.

JMU trailed 3-1 before securing the final three singles decisions to claim the win and finish the regular season with a 16-7 overall record.

At No. 1 singles, Guibe dropped the first set 6-2 to Ingrid Vojcinakova, but stormed back to take set two 6-4. With the team match tied 3-3, the two battled through the first three games before Guibe was able to pull ahead to 5-2. Vojcinakova, however, would not go quietly and won three straight games to knot the set at 5-all. After trading games, the two went to a tiebreak that Guibe powered through 7-4 to claim both the individual and team victories.

Guibe has won nine consecutive singles matches, all at the top position. She has a team-best 17 dual wins (17-5) and a team-high 25 overall singles victories (25-7) as a senior.

Trailing 3-1, sophomore Emma Petersen sank Eliska Petrackova in two sets (7-5, 6-1) at No. 2 singles to pull JMU within a point of ODU. Junior Dylan Owens tied the team score at 3-all with a come-from-behind battle at No. 5 singles, where Owens won sets two and three to claim the point (2-6, 7-5, 6-2) over Adriana Rajkovic.

JMU dropped the doubles point, giving ODU the 1-0 advantage heading into singles. The Monarchs jumped out to a 2-0 lead before junior Kimmy Herrock got the Dukes on the board with a win at No. 4. An ODU victory at No. 6 singles put the Monarchs within one of match point.
