WILMINGTON, N.C. – The James Madison women's tennis team completed fall tournament play Friday with a doubles sweep and five singles victories at the Seahawk Ocean Classic at the UNCW Courts.
This weekend's event is being competed under a hidden-dual format.
The Dukes began the day with three solid doubles wins, defeating a pair of Appalachian State tandems and a squad from Davidson.
The team of redshirt juniors
Daria Afanasyeva and
Kylie Moulin took down App State's Helena Jansen and Ellie Murphy, 6-4. JMU redshirt junior
Daniela Voloh and senior
Michelle Los Arcos downed ASU's Ksenia Aleshina and Olwyn Ryan-Bovey by a score of 7-5.
The Dukes capped off doubles with another 7-5 triumph, as senior
Amanda Nord and freshman
Alexandra Prudente beat Davidson's Mira Gladstone and Franny Shea.
In singles, JMU went 5-3 against Davidson, which included wins by JMU's top three singles players.
Afanasyeva won in super-tiebreak fashion, as she took down Josie Schaffer, 6-3, 1-6,1-0 (4).
Kylie Moulin moved to 2-0 on the weekend with a 7-6 (4), 6-3 win against Elizabeth Truluck, and Voloh rallied past Kavya Patel by scores of 3-6, 7-5, 1-0 (2).
Prudente remained unbeaten at UNCW Courts, as she cruised to a 6-3, 6-1 victory against Shea, and senior
Shannon McCarthy rounded out singles with a come-from-behind win versus
Linden Patterson, taking the match by scores of 3-6, 7-5, 1-0 (9).
The Dukes shifted back to doubles play with the threat of weather on Saturday, winning all four matches to finish the opening day. McCarthy and freshman
Hope Moulin upended UNCW's Lauren Robbins and Sarah Merrill, 6-3.
JMU also cruised by George Washington in doubles. Afanasyeva and
Kylie Moulin rolled to a 6-0 win over Alexandra Vesikallio and Stella Wiesemann. Voloh and Los Arcos breezed by Lindsay Thompson and Charlotte Bell, at 6-1, while Nord and Prudent ran past Sara Bodewes and Alejandra Ramirez, 6-3.
The rest of the scheduled tournament was washed out due to weather, and JMU will resume action next semester for dual-match play.
