Senior Sinead Sargeant, a name that JMU Athletics should never forget. She has been a stand out leader for the Women's JMU Track & Field/ Cross Country team and throughout the JMU Athletics community. Sinead has found a passion for diversity, equity, and inclusion throughout her time here as a Duke. She has served as the Diversity Chair for the JMU Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, as well as on the CAA board for SAAC. Most recently, Sinead has been a fellow for the Office of Civic engagement here at JMU.
"I grew up in a family where empathy was practiced and preached each and every day. From a young age, I was taught to value kindness, inclusivity, and being an active part of a loving community. Once I was old enough to recognize the white privilege bubble that has been protecting me my whole life, I knew I wanted to use my values and strengths to amplify the voices that aren't normally heard quite as loudly as mine. I noticed the respect that I was accorded simply due to the color of my skin, so I recognize my responsibility to use that privilege to fight for equal opportunities for all." - Sinead Sargeant
Sinead recognizes her gift in leadership and is motivated to lift the others around her to recognize and educate themselves on the reality of the world we live in today. Diversity is a well spoken topic within college athletic departments nationwide.
"I am on a diverse sports team with many Black sisters with such powerful and beautiful voices and opinions. I refuse to ever let the world attempt to make them feel less then. I want to do anything I can to empower my Black sisters and celebrate the diversity we get to experience each day as equals. I believe that is what a just world looks like. I think we should all be passionately working towards that goal." - Sinead Sargeant
The Office of Civic engagement became another home for Sinead. She has dedicated countless time and effort towards the goals, values, and initiatives relating to DEI and community awareness/involvement. The office's mission is to educate and inspire people to address public issues and cultivate a just and inclusive democracy. As a nonpartisan entity, JMU Civic emphasizes the acquisition of knowledge to make one a more informed participant in democracy, skills to make one a more effective participant, and values that embrace pluralism, open-mindedness, empathy, respect, diversity and inclusion. "There has been so much change happening in the world, our country, state and college campus that has occurred during my time at JMU. I believe that there is a real need for our generation to have opinions, stand up and make them heard. Civic engagement is a vehicle which allows us as a community to impact the decisions that our leaders are making on issues ranging from health, to the environment and social justice. I do not think this is a time for us to be silent, and the Office of Civic engagement is an amazing asset that supports us in these endeavors." - Sinead Sargeant
Sinead has sparked various aspects of change among student-athletes, administration, and faculty/staff. Her voice has led her to accomplish great things and inspire the ones behind her to take a stand on the views they are excited about. When asked to list three things she is most proud of when considering her involvement with JMU Athletics.
1- "The achievement which I am most proud of is that in 2020 we were able to get 99% of our student athletes registered to vote." - Sinead Sargeant
2- "I am proud of the leader I have become. I think in my early years here I was just a positive and enthusiastic voice that made people feel welcomed and appreciated in our JMU family. I feel as though I have grown into a trustworthy voice where people value my input and I can help create change. I stand up for what I believe in and I am proud that I am at the point where I believe in myself." - Sinead Sargeant
3- "I am proud of my efforts for building and strengthening our inclusive family. JMU Athletics is truly a beautiful community, but I wanted us to feel supported by one another in order to truly feel united. We preached unity and support, but I wanted it to be verbalized, and discussed, and overtly agreed to. That is how the unity pledge was created. Each JMU student athlete vows to not tolerate racism, prejudice, discrimination or injustice, and activley work together for a more equitable future." - Sinead Sargeant
You must be wondering what is next for Ms. Sinead Sargeant ……
"I am a senior graduating with a Bachelors in Interdisciplinary Liberal Studies with a focus on Race, Gender, Ethnicity and Class, and next year I am getting my Masters in Education with a focus in Elementary Ed. To be frank, I am not certain where my exact path will be or where my journey will take me. Although, I am well aware of what I am passionate about. If I am teaching, I know my whole heart will be creating an inclusive classroom where each student feels appreciated and welcomed. If I am working in education administration, I know all of my energy will be put towards equitable practices and implicit bias training. Wherever I end up, my passion for equity, inclusion, and unity will be in the center of it all. I aim to make a difference in the world, from a classroom or a different stage. I want to continue to develop my voice as well as make space for the voices of others." - Sinead Sargeant
