DAVIDSON, N.C. – James Madison saw strong play from start to finish, as it upended Davidson 6-1 on Tuesday afternoon at Knobloch Tennis Center.
The Dukes improved to 10-2 this season, having won four straight, while the Wildcats dropped to 5-6. This is JMU's best start through 12 matches since the 2017-18 season when it began 12-2.
The win was also the first over Davidson since March 7, 2006 and was the largest margin of victory against the Wildcats since a 7-2 decision back on March 3, 1990.
The Dukes opened the day with a solid performance on all three doubles courts to claim the early 1-0 lead.
Holden Koons and
Youssef Sadek cruised to a 6-1 victory on court one versus Maxwell Kachkarov and Nico Pinzon.
The doubles point was secured on court three when
Oscar Hernandez and
Mario Pena downed William Clark and Juan Camilo Gongora, 6-2. The tandem of
William Karpinksi and
Edson Sanchez also led 4-2 on court two when doubles was clinched.
The momentum carried into singles, as JMU took five of six matches to close out the win.
Sanchez doubled JMU's lead to 2-0 with a 6-4, 6-0 win against Brooks Green on court five. Just two minutes later, Hernandez dispatched Gongora, 6-3, 6-1, on court four, giving JMU a 3-0 lead.
The team win was secured on court two, as Sadek took down Kachkarov by scores of 6-3, 6-4. It was Sadek's highest-ranked win, as it was his first at JMU's #2 spot.
Koons extended the lead to 5-0 with his fifth straight win. He defeated Alejandro Solares, 6-3, 7-6 (1), moving to 11-1 at JMU's top singles spot.
After a Davidson win on court three gave the hosts their only point,
