CHARLESTON, S.C. – James Madison men's tennis came up just short in multiple three-set decisions, falling at the College of Charleston, 4-3, on Thursday evening at the College of Charleston Tennis Center at Patriots Point.
The Dukes now sit at 10-3, while the Cougars improved to 6-6.
Doubles play began with a big win on court one for the Dukes.
Holden Koons and
Youssef Sadek dispatched Zac Larke and Robby Krick, 6-0.
Oscar Hernandez and
Mario Pena clinched the doubles point and put JMU in the lead with a 6-3 victory on court three over Johnny Wang and Brolin Dorsey.
In singles play, Koons continued his stellar run on court one this season. He defeated Larke 6-0, 6-2 to improve to 12-1 in dual-match singles play.
Charleston won the second singles on court two, and then followed that up with a tough three-set win on court five to even the score.
Edson Sanchez and Wang alternated the first two sets, and then went to a tiebreaker in the third set. Sanchez held two match points but was unable to convert, falling to Wang, 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (6).
Following that, Sadek gave the lead right back to the Dukes. After falling in a first-set tiebreak by an 8-6 score to Matias Gaedechens on court three, he settled in and won the final two sets, rallying for a 6-7 (6), 6-2, 6-0 victory.
The Dukes were unable to get the clinching point, as the Cougars won the final two singles matches on courts six and four, respectively, with each coming in three sets.
