BUIES CREEK, N.C. – James Madison men's tennis was unable to overcome an early deficit, dropping a 6-1 decision at Campbell on Friday afternoon at the Nisbet Tennis Center.
The Camels moved to 8-4 on the year, while the Dukes fell to 10-4.
Campbell won a pair of doubles matches and five of six singles matchups, with
Holden Koons recording the lone win for JMU.
The hosts grabbed the early 1-0 lead after clinching the doubles point. Tomas Balazi and Leon Petco took a 6-3 win from
William Karpinski and
Edson Sanchez on court two. The team of Damien Nezar and Benjamin Maes gave CU the lead with a 6-4 victory versus Koons and
Youssef Sadek.
In singles play, the Camels were able to win in straight sets on courts four through six to capture the team win.
Robin Angles downed Sanchez, 6-3, 6-4, on court four to make it a 2-0 lead for Campbell. After a 6-2, 6-3 triumph occurred on court six, with Noe MacQuart defeating
Mario Pena, the Camels clinched the match on court five. In that match Petko outlasted
Mathieu Josserand, 7-6 (4), 6-3.
Campbell made it a 5-0 lead on court three, as Pol Otin held off Sadek in three sets, 6-2, 4-6, 6-2.
Koons got JMU on the board with a come-from-behind victory on court one. After dropping the first set, he rallied past Nezar for a 3-6, 7-5, 6-3 win. It was Koons' seventh straight victory, as he moved to 13-1 at the top singles spot this spring.
The match closed with a heartbreaking setback for
William Karpinski on court two. After forcing a third set, he fell to Balazi in a tiebreak, 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (2).
