HARRISONBURG, Va. – James Madison men's tennis returned to Harrisonburg and came away with a 6-1 victory against conference foe Drexel Thursday afternoon at Hillside Courts.
The Dukes improved to 11-4, while the Dragons fell to 7-5.
Doubles play began with a win on court one for the Dukes.
Holden Koons and
Youssef Sadek dispatched Xandy Hammitt and Alex De Sousa, 6-2. The duo now sits at 11-3 this season, including a 9-3 mark at the top doubles spot.
Edson Sanchez and
Mathieu Josserand clinched the doubles point for JMU on court two. They earned a 6-3 victory over Sanil Jagtiani and Matvey Radionav.
William Karpinski and
Oscar Hernandez also held a 5-4 lead on court three over Djordje Janackovic and Gustav Wogen when the match was left unfinished.
Singles play began with another win for Koons on court one. The reigning conference player of the week defeated Hammitt, 6-2, 6-3, to earn his eighth straight singles victory.
The Dukes doubled their lead to clinch the team win, with victories separated by mere seconds. Hernandez came out on top over Radionav, 6-3, 6-2, on court four, making it a 3-0 Dukes lead.
The clinching point came just two seconds after Hernandez's triumph. Sanchez earned the win on court five, 6-1, 6-4, over Hugo Brungs.
The Dukes' fifth point came after a huge comeback on court two by Karpinski. After falling behind 4-0 in the first set, he stormed back against De Sousa. He won the first set, 7-5, followed by a 6-4 decision in set two.
Sadek had a comeback of his own on court three. He dropped the first set to Janackovic, but found his groove in the following two sets, coming away with a 1-6, 6-2, 6-2 victory.
Drexel closed the match with a three-set victory on court six for the final margin.
