Dukes Come Out on Top Day Two in Memphis

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – James Madison softball rallied on the final day of the Tiger Classic, beating ETSU 9-1 and Memphis 8-7 on Saturday at the Tiger Softball Complex.

The Dukes improved to 8-12 on the season while the Bucs fell to 4-21 and the Tigers to 11-17.

The Dukes racked up 21 hits and 17 runs across the two games, led by Hannah Shifflett who tallied a total of five hits. Emily Phillips hit two homers, while Shifflett, Hallie Hall and Kayla Boseman all notched one.

GAME 1: JMU 9, ETSU 1
JMU started off strong in the bottom of the second when Lauren Bernett hit an RBI single to put the Dukes on the board. Hallie Hall followed up in the bottom of the third with a home run to left center to take the Dukes up 3-0. Jasmine Hall extended the lead when she made it home on a fielding error by the Bucs.

ETSU tallied a run in the top of the fourth, but the Dukes maintained their lead with RBIs from Kylee Gleason and Jasmine Hall in the bottom of the fourth. Phillips hit the second home run of the day to finish off the scoring for JMU for a final score of 9-1.

Meredith Wells started off in the circle for JMU, striking out two batters and only allowed one run.

GAME 2: JMU 8, Memphis 7
Memphis started off the game with two runs in the second inning, but the Dukes responded in the third and fourth innings with three home runs from Shifflett, Boseman and Phillips to take a 4-2 lead.

The Tigers came back in the fifth with five runs to take a 7-4 lead. The Dukes were able to respond in the top of the sixth with an RBI double from Reed Butler to tighten the score to 7-6. Butler continued to bring in the runs with two more RBIs in the top of the seventh, allowing JMU to take the lead.

JMU took a 8-7 lead on Butler's two-RBI single and was able to hold off Memphis in the bottom of the seventh to take home the win.

Alexis Bermudez pitched 4.2 innings with three strikeouts and was relieved by Alissa Humphrey, who matched Bermudez with three strikeouts of her own.

UP NEXT
The Dukes will head over to Radford on Tuesday with a doubleheader at 4 p.m. and 6 p.m., matchups that were rescheduled from this past Wednesday due to inclement weather.
