YORK, Pa. – It may have been a neutral-site match, but it felt like home for James Madison men's tennis, as
Holden Koons celebrated the return to his hometown with a pair of victories and the Dukes took down Morgan State, 5-2, on Friday evening at the Wisehaven Tennis Center.
The Dukes improved to 14-5 on the year, while the Bears fell to 8-8 in 2022.
After Morgan State grabbed the doubles advantage with a 6-2 win on court two, the Dukes rallied, claiming wins on courts one and three to take a 1-0 match lead.
Koons and
Youssef Sadek downed Makkijha Brown and Sebastian Lopez, 6-3, before the tandem of
Oscar Hernandez and
William Karpinski clinched the doubles point with a 6-3 victory over Niles Rachal and Rhajzon Rankins.
Karpinski quickly doubled the lead in singles play, dropping just two games court two en route to a 6-1, 6-1 triumph against Brown.
Mathieu Josserand extended the lead to 3-0 with a straight-set win on court six, as he upended Rankins, 6-1, 6-4.
Edson Sanchez served up the match-clinching point moments later on court five, besting Lopez, 6-3, 6-4.
After the clinch, MSU got on the board, as Rachal beat Hernandez, 3-6, 6-0, 2-1 retired, on court five.
Koons fired up the crowd once again on center court, as he claimed yet another victory on court one, defeating Mikeal Carpenter, 6-2, 7-6 (4). It was Koons' 12th straight singles win, and he moved to 18-1 in dual matches and 29-9 overall this season.
In the final match of the evening Morgan State's Nihit Rawal held off Sadek on court three by scores of 7-6 (5), 6-4.
