NEWARK, Del. – James Madison men's tennis was unable to get a lead against Delaware, falling 4-3 Saturday afternoon at the DFH Outdoor Courts and the Delcastle Tennis Center.
The Dukes fell to 13-5, while the Blue Hens improved to 11-8.
After Delaware won on court two in doubles play,
Oscar Hernandez and
William Karpinski earned a victory on court three. They dispatched of Liam Hedlund and Luis Molina, 6-3.
The doubles point would be decided on court one, where
Holden Koons and
Youssef Sadek went to a tiebreaker versus Pierce Gilheany and James Wilkinson. The duo from Delaware came out on top, 7-6 (6), to earn the doubles point for the Blue Hens.
Singles play was a back-and-forth affair, with the two teams exchanging victories. Koons earned the first win by defeating Wilkinson, 6-1, 6-4, on court one. Koons completed an undefeated run at #1 singles in conference play and moved his singles record to 17-1 this spring.
After Delaware won on court six to regain the lead, Hernandez evened the score once again. He beat Alexandre Gluck, 6-3, 6-3, on court four.
Delaware answered with a win on court two, before Sadek tied the match at three apiece on court three. He earned the victory over Molina, 7-6 (5), 6-3.
The match would go on to be decided on court five.
Edson Sanchez dropped the first set to Guilherme Valdoleiros but would go on to win the second and force a third. Rain and hail forced the play to be continued indoors, where Valdoleiros won four important deuce points on his way to a 6-4, 5-7, 6-0, victory.
