This year, the NCAA hosted a virtual Career in Sports Forum June 2nd - June 5th in Indianapolis, Indiana that allowed selected student-athletes from various institutions an opportunity to learn about and explore careers in sports. The forum allows attendees to network with peers and decision-makers at the campus, conference and national level of college athletics.
Isabella Bogdan, from our JMU Track & Field team, attended this virtual program so she could acquire as much information and feedback from industry leaders to help her invest in a potential career in sports.
At this event, there were notable guest speakers who have been deemed successful in the sports industry. They spoke on topics such as: professional development, practical approaches to the sports job search, personal branding, developing a career plan, and more to best prepare the attendees for their future.
"My biggest takeaway from the NCAA Career in Sports Forum was that the sports industry is not always glamorous but it is rewarding. The biggest lessons we were taught and told by almost every presenter was to have confidence, be yourself, gain experience, and the time is now. Attending the NCAA Career in Sports Forum broadened my knowledge of the sports industry,"- Bogdan stated.
Not only is Bogdan a leader on the track, but holds herself accountable to develop her leadership brand away from her sport. Isabel plays an important role in SAAC (Student-Athlete Advisory Committee) as she collaborates with student-athletes across various sports to be the voice for JMU Athletics.
"As a member of SAAC, I would like to bring back ideas and situations that were discussed with other student-athletes that could improve our SAAC program. I want to help other student-athletes that are interested in the industry understand the different jobs and opportunities that aren't talked about as much. I would like to build connections with our athletic department and athletes and the NCAA," reflected Bogdan.
