HARRISONBURG, Va. – Despite holding two different leads, James Madison couldn't hang on, as Georgia Southern won three straight singles matches down the stretch to upend the Dukes, 4-2, in Sun Belt Conference men's tennis action Saturday afternoon at East Campus Tennis Courts.
The Eagles improved to 13-3 on the year and 2-0 in Sun Belt play, while the Dukes fell to 8-7 and 1-3.
The Dukes won the doubles point and claimed a singles match, as
Holden Koons was the lone Duke to go 2-0 on the day. Georgia Southern won four of five completed singles matches to rally for the win.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Doubles Play
- JMU won two of three matches to claim the doubles point and early 1-0 lead.
- On court one, Koons and Francisco Sinopoli took a 6-4 decision from Pol del Castillo and Aaron Williams.
- GS evened things on court three, as Judson Blair and Pierre Mouesca claimed a 6-4 win over Aathreya Mahesh and Youssef Sadek.
- The Dukes captured the doubles point on court two, where Julian Lozano and Edson Sanchez held off Valentin Dun and Alexandros Roumpis, 7-5.
Singles Play
- GS squared the match at 1-1 with a victory on court two, as Williams downed Lozano, 6-2, 6-4.
- Shortly after, JMU reclaimed the lead on court one, with Koons registering a 6-1, 7-5 triumph against del Castillo.
- The Eagles tied the match with a marathon win on court three. After dropping the first in a tiebreak, Mouesca won a second-set breaker and edged Sadek in the third, taking the bout by scores of 6-7 (5), 7-6 (2), 7-5.
- Georgia Southern took the lead moments later over on court four, where Dimitris Paliouras defeated Sinopoli, 6-3, 6-2.
- The deciding point came on court five in comeback fashion. Sanchez won the opening set, but Blair rallied back for a 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 win, holding serve in every game of the third set.
