HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Despite falling in an early deficit, James Madison men's tennis rallied back with five singles victories, including two in three sets, to take down Southern Miss in Sun Belt Conference action on Sunday afternoon at the Southern Miss Tennis Complex.
The Dukes improved to 10-8 on the year and 2-4 in Sun Belt play, while the Golden Eagles fell to 6-12 and 0-4.
Julian Lozano and
Edson Sanchez each went 2-0, collecting the lone doubles win for JMU while each player rallied from a set down to claim three-set victories. Joining them in the singles win column were
Holden Koons,
Youssef Sadek and
Francisco Sinopoli.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Doubles Play
- USM claimed the early lead by squeaking out the doubles point with wins on courts one and three.
- The hosts got the advantage with a 6-2 win by Dakotah Bobo and Shamirul Shahril against Koons and Sinopoli.
- JMU evened things up on court two, where Lozano and Sanchez downed Alexander Gima and Alan Sanson, 6-4.
- The Golden Eagles secured the point on court three, as Antoine Audrain and Saheb Sodhi slid past Aathreya Mahesh and Sadek.
Singles Play
- The Dukes quickly evened the match and took the lead for good with wins on courts one and three.
- Koons dispatched Bobo, 6-0, 6-2 on court one, while Sadek took care of Sanson, 6-0, 6-3, on court three.
- Sinopoli extended the lead to 3-1 on court four, earning a 6-3, 6-4 triumph against Ilimjon Nabiev.
- USM got one back on court six, as Gima defeated Mahesh, 7-5, 6-3.
- The final two matches went the way of Southern Miss in the opening sets, but the Dukes would eventually rally in both bouts to clinch the win.
- Lozano dropped the first set 6-3 to Shahril, before cruising in the final two frames for a 3-6, 6-3, 6-1 victory on court two.
- In the final match of the day, Sanchez also fell by the same score in the first set before bouncing back with a 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 win over Sodhi on court five.
MATCH NOTES
- Holden Koons won his fourth straight singles match, moving to 13-5 at the No. 1 spot this spring.
- Sunday marked JMU's third win this season after dropping the doubles point.
- It was JMU's first conference road win since April 13, 2019 at Drexel, which was also a 5-2 win.
