CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Charlotte won two of three doubles matches and claimed four of five of its singles matches in straight sets to upend James Madison women's tennis on Friday afternoon at the Halton-Wagner Tennis Complex.
The 49ers evened their record to 4-4 while the Dukes fell to 2-5 on the year.
JMU produced a doules win by
Reka Matko and
Hope Moulin, while
Alexandra Prudente closed out the day with a thrilling super tiebreak victory. Moulin also went to three sets on her singles court where she fell short.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Doubles Play
- Charlottes gained the early doubles advantage, as Lucie Petruzelova and Emma Wilkins cruised to a 6-0 win on court one against Daria Munteanu and Ines Oliveira.
- JMU came back with a 6-2 victory on court three, courtesy of Matko and Moulin winning four of the final five games to down Lucia Aranda and Ares Teixido Garcia.
- The 49ers clinched the doubles point on court two, as Shona Nakano and Sara Suchankova won three straight games to upend Cate Broerman and Hayley Glen, 6-2.
Singles Play
- The Niners kept the momentum into singles play, as the hosts won first sets on four of six courts.
- Charlotte quickly doubled its lead to 2-0 on court one, as Petruzelova defeated Munteanu by a 6-1, 6-2 count.
- The lead extended to 3-0 over on court two, where Teixido Garcia pulled away in the second set from Broerman for a 6-2, 6-3 triumph.
- The 49ers clinched the match with a straight-set win on court three, as Suchankova held off Oliveira, 6-4, 6-4.
- UNCC made it a 5-0 lead on court five, as Nakano won consecutive games late to slip by Matko, 6-3, 7-5.
- Charlotte upped the lead to 6-0 on court four, as Arana rallied past Moulin for a 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 victory.
- The day's final bout went to the wire, as Prudente staved off Wilkins in a tiebreak in the first set and a super tiebreaker in the third, earning a 7-6 (3), 2-6, 1-0 (6) triumph.
