Mathis’ Walk-Off Homer Lifts JMU to 3-1 Victory Over Texas State

HARRISONBURG, Va. – Sophomore KK Mathis clubbed a walk-off home run to give James Madison softball a 3-1 win over Texas State on Sunday afternoon at Veterans Memorial Park.
JMU (17-9, 1-2 Sun Belt) recorded three runs and eight hits, while Texas State saw its nine-game winning streak snapped. The Bobcats fell to 22-7 overall and 2-1 in league play, totaling one run on six hits.
Mathis finished the day 2-for-3 at the plate with a home run, two RBI, and a walk. Reed Butler extended her on-base streak to 20 straight games, finishing 2-for-4. Payton List finished 2-for-3 at the plate with an RBI while also picking up her sixth win in the circle this season in 4.0 innings of work. Bella Henzler (1-for-4) and Hallie Hall (1-for-3) also picked up hits in the win.
List, along Kirsten Fleet and Alissa Humphrey, combined to only give up one run against a Texas State lineup scoring more than five runs a game. Fleet scattered two hits over 2.0 innings, while Humphrey worked 2.0 perfect innings.

How It Happened
- Fleet worked around two singles in the first inning, striking out Karmyn Bass to end the threat.
- List entered the game in the top of the third, inducing three ground outs to post a scoreless frame and keep the score 0-0.
- Piper Randolph reached on a wild pitch with one out in the fourth, and JJ Smith doubled her home to give the Bobcats a 1-0 lead.
- The Dukes answered in the bottom of the fourth, as List lined a single past the pitcher to tie the game at 1-1 through four.
- Texas State loaded the bases with nobody out in the top of the seventh, but three fielders choice's stranded the bases loaded and kept the score deadlocked at 1-1 going into the home seventh.
- Randolph lined a two-out double in the top of the eighth, but List induced a ground out to keep the game at 1-1 through 7 ½ innings.
- Henzler singled with one out in the bottom of the eighth, and Mathis ended the game with the long ball to left field.
- Mathis' walk-off is the first of her career and second for JMU this season (Payton List – Binghamton, 3/10/24)
- Butler reached base for the 20th consecutive game, finishing 2-for-4.
- The win improved JMU's record vs. Texas State to 2-4.
- Texas State left nine runners on base, compared to the Dukes' five.
