HARRISONBURG, Va. – James Madison forced a pair of three-set matches and played tough in doubles but ultimately dropped a 7-0 decision to #75 Old Dominion on Saturday afternoon in Sun Belt Conference women's tennis action at East Campus Tennis Courts.
The Monarchs improved to 11-5 this spring and 7-0 in Sun Belt play while the Dukes dropped to 8-9 overall and 4-3 in league matches.
ODU captured the doubles point with wins on courts one and two, while the tandem of
Reka Matko and
Hope Moulin kept their unbeaten streak intact on court three. On the singles side, ODU won all six courts, including four of them in straight sets.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Doubles Play
- ODU claimed two of three courts to grab the 1-0 lead.
- Ulyana Romanova and Alexandra Viktorovich downed Cate Broerman and Alexandra Prudente by a 6-3 margin on court two.
- Shortly after, Matko and Moulin moved to 7-0 this spring as a duo, dispatching Allison Isaacs and Kira Matushkina, 6-4.
- Moments later, ODU secured the doubles point, as Sofia Johnson and Lidiia Rasskouskaia won consecutive games to upend Daria Munteanu and Ines Oliveira, 7-5.
Singles Play
- ODU maintained the momentum into singles play going up a set early on all six singles courts.
- Johnson fended off Munteanu in the second set for a 6-3, 6-4 win on court one.
- ODU clinched the match by way of three-set victories on courts three and two, despite strong second-set performances from Moulin and Broerman. Isaacs downed Moulin 6-4, 3-6, 6-0 on court three, while Viktorovich powered past Broerman, 7-5, 2-6, 6-2.
- The Monarch moved the advantage to 5-0 with a straight-set triumph on court four, where Rasskouskaia earned a 6-3, 6-1 win over Matko.
- The lead grew to 6-0, as Romanova took down Hayley Glen, 6-0, 6-4, on court six. Glen had battled to 4-4 in the second before back-to-back games for Romanova closed it.
- On court five, Matushkina squeaked out the first set before having a solid second to defeat Prudente, 7-5, 6-0.
UP NEXT
The Dukes are back home next weekend for a pair of Sun Belt matches, as they host Coastal Carolina on Saturday, April 13 and Georgia Southern on Sunday, April 14.
Both matches are set for 10 a.m. starts at Hillside Courts, and the second will be Senior Day for Broerman, who'll play in her final home match at JMU.
