HARRISONBURG, Va. – James Madison held multiple leads during singles play, but Coastal Carolina rallied on two courts and fended off one match point to down the Dukes, 4-3, in Sun Belt Conference women's tennis action Saturday afternoon at Hillside Courts.
The Chanticleers moved to 13-7 on the year and 7-3 in conference play, while the Dukes fell to 8-10 and 4-4. This was CCU's first win in three tries against JMU, as it avenged a 4-3 loss to the Dukes last season in Conway, S.C.
JMU won the doubles points and claimed courts one and two in singles play, but Coastal took courts three through six, which included three-set winners on three, five and six.
Daria Munteanu and
Ines Oliveira each went 2-0 on the day, teaming for a doubles win and claiming JMU's singles victories.
JMU was within a point of clinching the match before Cecile Morin staved off the match point on five and rallying to win a second-set tiebreak, setting up a 6-1 win in the third frame.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Doubles Play
- JMU took the early 1-0 lead with wins on courts one and two while leading on three.
- Munteanu and Oliveira controlled the pace early and earned a 6-3 victory over Anna Babayan and Jesse Hollins on court one.
- On the next court, Cate Broerman and Alexandra Prudente ran away late for a 6-2 triumph versus Kata Foldeak and Morin.
- The team of Reka Matko and Hope Moulin led Nicole Abel and Brooke Rogers, 5-3, when doubles concluded.
Singles Play
- Munteanu turned in a solid second set to down Abel in straight sets, at 6-4, 6-2, on court one. The win moved her to 8-3 on center court and 12-4 overall this spring.
- CCU got on the board on court four, as Foldeak won a tight contest with Moulin, at 6-4, 6-4.
- The Chants tied the match at 2-2 with a comeback win on court three. After dropping the opening set, Hollins rallied back for a 2-6, 6-3, 6-3 victory against Broerman.
- JMU regained the lead, at 3-2, on court two, as Oliveira split sets with Babayan before cruising 6-2 in the third to earn a 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 triumph.
- Coastal tied the match on court six, as Aida Maria Mitrache had a strong third set to upend Prudente, 7-5, 4-6, 6-2.
- In the final match, Morin faced a match point against Matko but saved it with a win on a deuce point while trailing 5-4 in the third. She would go on to win a breaker, 7-5, before rolling in the third for a 6-7 (5), 7-6 (5), 6-1 win to clinch the match for Coastal.
