LYNCHBURG, Va. – James Madison captured its first win of the 2025 women's tennis spring season on Friday, utilizing a pair of doubles victories and a trio of straight-set triumphs to upend Liberty, 4-1, at the Liberty Indoor Tennis Center.
JMU (1-7) overcame multiple break points in both doubles and singles play to earn its first win over Liberty (3-4).
Hope Moulin and
Daria Munteanu each went 2-0 on the day, teaming in doubles and cruising on their respective singles courts.
Mia Saveljic added a singles win to clinch the match for JMU.
"I'm really proud of the team today. They fought incredibly hard, " Head Coach
Tyson Thomas said. "We had a really challenging start to our schedule this year, and the team never lost belief and what they are capable of doing. We're starting to see some great things evolve."
In doubles play, Moulin and Munteanu dominated court three, downing Yu-Yun Chen and Celina Joseph, 6-0. After Liberty squared double with a 6-3 win on court two, the 40th-ranked tandem of
Ines Oliveira and
Sophie Williams stormed back from a 4-1 deficit and staved off three break points in the deciding game to defeat Daniella O'Neill and Maria Turchetto, 7-5.
Munteanu and Moulin were impressive in singles play, as each needed just over an hour to win their courts. On court one, Munteanu turned in arguably her most impressive victory of the season with a 6-1, 6-1 win against O'Neill.
Moments later, Moulin finished off Joseph to extend JMU's lead to 3-0 after conceding just five games, taking court six by scores of 6-3, 6-2.
Liberty got on the board with a hard-fought match between Turchetto and Williams on court four. After sneaking by in the opening set, and with the second frame tied at 4-4, Turchetto won a huge deciding point, leading to her 6-4, 6-4 win over Williams.
In a tight bout on court five, Saveljic won a massive deciding point in the second set to take the lead, as she broke Anika Lemus in the ensuing and final game to clinch the match for JMU with a 7-5, 6-4 triumph.
JMU also led in the third set on two other courts as
Elena Kraleva led Chen on court two, at 6-3, 3-6, 3-1, while Oliveira had pulled ahead on court three after dropping the first set to Yoanna Radulova, as that match went unfinished at 4-6, 6-3, 4-2.
The win was JMU's first win over LU since the 2018 season.
JMU returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 15 as it remains in Lynchburg to face Michigan State in a neutral-site match at 1 p.m. from the Liberty Indoor Tennis Center.
