GILBERT, Az. – The James Madison tandem of
Ines Oliveira and
Sophie Williams were ranked 40th nationally in the latest ITA women's tennis doubles rankings (Feb. 5), the Intercollegiate Tennis Association announced Wednesday.
Â
Oliveira and Williams enter the doubles ranks for the first time as a team after putting together a pair of marquee victories early in the dual season.
Â
Having faced only Atlantic Coast Conference teams through five dual matches, the JMU duo are 2-3 on the young season, which includes a dominant 6-1 victory on Jan. 12 against the former #1-ranked tandem of North Carolina's Susanna Maltby and Carson Tanguilig.
Â
They also own a 6-3 triumph over Syracuse's Miyuka Kimoto and Anastasia Sysoeva, which occurred on Jan. 25. Each of the three defeats this spring have come at the hands of nationally-ranked doubles teams.
Â
Adding in fall results, Oliveira and Williams are 6-6 as a tag team, having posted a 4-3 record in tournament play.
Â
This is the first time a JMU doubles team have been in the ITA national rankings since November of 2023 when
Cate Broerman and
Hope Moulin were 26th after their run to the ITA Atlantic Regional semifinals.
Â
JMU returns to action this weekend for a pair of matches in Winston-Salem, N.C. when it takes on Furman on Saturday, Feb. 8 and Wake Forest on Sunday, Feb. 9. Both matches are set for noon starts.
