Kantor, Williams Win Singles Flights to Cap Weekend at Tribe Invitational

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – James Madison's Anna Kantor and Sophie Williams each claimed singles flight titles, as the women's tennis program opened the fall season with 20 total victories at the Tribe Invitational, hosted by William & Mary at the Mackesy Tennis Center.

The Dukes captured 14 singles wins, highlighted by Kantor going 3-0 in the Grey Singles Draw and Williams posting a 3-0 mark in the White Singles Draw.

Kantor opened her JMU career with a thrilling 7-6 (4), 6-7 (5), 10-8 victory in the first round against Richmond's Lucy Webber. In the semifinals, she cruised by Sarah Wang of Penn, 6-2, 6-2. In the title bout, she had a strong first and held off Penn's Liza Tkachenko, 6-1, 6-4.

Williams continued her trend of strong results in fall play by taking all three matches in straight sets. She first downed William & Mary's Alexia Gonzalez-Galino, 6-3, 6-4, before beating East Carolina's Xenia Jeromin, 6-4, 6-3. In the final, she cruised to a 6-2, 6-2 triumph over South Florida's Josefine Falster.

Other Dukes who went 2-1 in singles were Daria Munteanu, Brooklyn Hoffmann and Corinna Rietmann.

Munteanu finished third in the Green Singles Draw with wins over W&M's Sia Chaudry, 6-4, 6-4, and Yaelle Vaissaud, 6-1, 6-4. Hoffmann began her collegiate career with a victory against Lara Stojanovski of Penn, 7-6 (3), 3-6, 10-7 and later finished third in the Gold Singles Draw with a 3-6, 6-1, 11-9 win over Richmond's Lainey O'Neill. Rietmann reached the final of the Black Singles Draw after claiming wins over Penn's Maya Urata, 7-5, 6-3, and W&M's Mira Kernagis, 7-6 (6), 2-6, 10-7.

In doubles play, Munteanu and Rietmann reached the Griffin Doubles Draw final with a 6-4 win over Penn's Tkachenko and Urata and a 6-3 victory USF's Amalie Drukerova and Mergherita Marcon. In the final the duo dropped a 6-4 decision to Penn's Lara Stojanovski and Sasha Motlagh.

Also going 2-1 were Hoffmann and Williams in the Colonial Doubles Draw. They opened with a 7-5 win against USF's Sienna Leeson and Charlotte Ruud and later finished third with a 7-6 (4) triumph over USF's Francesca Miglio and Melissa Senli.
JMU is in action next at the ITA All-American Championships, which will be played in Cary, N.C., from Sept. 20-28. Participating Dukes will be unveiled next week. The entire squad returns to the court on Oct. 10-12 in Charlottesville at the Wahoowa Invitational.
