WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Furman used a pair of doubles wins and a trio of straight-set singles victories to down James Madison, 4-0, in neutral-site, women's tennis action on Saturday afternoon at the Wake Forest Indoor Tennis Center.
The Paladins (5-1) continued their strong start to the spring after outlasting the Dukes (0-6) in doubles play, earning a 6-4 win on court one and a 6-3 triumph on court three to snag the early 1-0 lead.
Early on in singles play, the teams were split 3-3 before Furman pulled ahead by rallying in a pair to grab first sets on five of six courts.
Furman doubled its lead to 2-0 with a 6-0, 6-3 win by Grace Thomas over Corinna Rietmann on court six. After holding off Sophie Williams in the first set, Ellie Schulson made it 3-0 for the Paladins on court four, claiming. 6-4, 6-0 victory.
Sara Snyder clinched the match for Furman on court one, using a thrilling 13-11 tiebreak win in the first set and fending off Daria Munteanu in the second for a 7-6 (7), 6-4 win.
Three other matches went unfinished, which included Elena Kraleva leading Jess Dawson by a 7-6 (5), 3-4 margin on court two. Hope Moulin had forced a third set with Macy Hitchcock on court five, with it going unfinished at 3-6, 6-4, 2-3. Ines Oliveira also trailed in her bout against Marissa Pennings on court three, at 5-7, 4-5.
JMU returns to action on Sunday, Feb. 9 when it faces Wake Forest in Winston-Salem, N.C. The bout is set for a noon start.
