WILMINGTON, N.C. – James Madison junior
Václav Tichý produced a career-best second-place finish and 54-hole score to power the men's golf team to a runner-up showing at the Seahawk Intercollegiate on Tuesday afternoon.
After opening with a 70 (-1) on the par-71, 6,810-yard layout at Cape Fear Country Club on Monday, Tichý finished with seven birdies and only one bogey to card a six-under 65 in the second round of play. He closed with a 69 (-1) on Monday to place second on the 80-player leaderboard behind Nashawn Tyson of Florida Atlantic, who finished an incredible 16 strokes under par and broke the Seahawk Intercollegiate record for low 54-hole score (197)
Tichý was joined in the top-10 by teammate
Daniel Cheng, who finished tied for ninth with a 54-hole score of 212 (-1) with three strong rounds of 70-71-71. It is Cheng's second top-10 finish of the 2024-25 season and ninth in his career.
Tournament host UNCW pulled away from the 13-team field on Tuesday, using a final-round score of nine-under 275 to finish at 837 (-15) overall for the tournament and 16 strokes ahead of the Dukes in second.
Junior
Garrett Kuhla continued his solid junior campaign with a tie for 24th, collecting a three-round cumulative score of 218 (+5). Kuhla fired a 71 (E) in Monday's opening round before tallying a 73 and 74 in the final two rounds.
Tommy McKenzie (222, +9) and
Alex Seibal (225, +12) finished 48th and tied for 58th, respectively, to round out the JMU representation in North Carolina. McKenzie carded a two-over 73 in his opening round for his best showing of the tournament, while Seibal recorded an even-par 71 in his second round.
The Dukes will continue their spring season at the Old Corkscrew Intercollegiate in Fort Myers, Fla., on April 7-8 before closing the regular season with the Mountaineer Invitational on April 14-15.
