Daniel Cheng tied for seventh place to lead the men's golf team to a sixth-place showing at the Old Corkscrew Intercollegiate on Tuesday afternoon.
Cheng opened play on Monday with a 70 (-2) on the par-72, 7,393-yard Old Corkscrew Golf Club and posted scores of 74 (+2) and 73 in his final two rounds to finish at 217 (+1) on the 60-player leaderboard. The tie for seventh is Cheng's third top-10 finish of the season and 10th of his career.
Junior
Václav Tichý placed as JMU's No. 2 finisher at 223 (+7), tying for 19th place with rounds of 73-76-74. Through 26 rounds, Tichý owns a stroke average of 71.11 – which would be the third-lowest in single-season program history.
Florida Atlantic took home medalist honors in the 10-team field with a 54-hole score of 868 (+4), three strokes ahead of No. 50 Florida Gulf Coast at 871 (+7). Nolan Harper finished as the individual medalist with a three-round total of 209 (-7) and was joined on the podium by NaShawn Tyson (213, -3) of Florida Atlantic and Jonathan Ericsson (214, -2) of UAB.
Classmates
Garrett Kuhla and
Tommy McKenzie tied for 29th at 226 (+10). Kuhla opened play on Monday with a first-round 72 (E) and finished with scores of 74 (+2) and 80 in the second and third rounds, respectively. McKenzie matched his career-low single-round score of 71 (-1) in Monday's second round, sandwiched between a 76 (+5) and 79.
Freshman
René Bergendi tied for 50th with a three-round score of 237 (+21), highlighted by a 76 (+4) in the second round. Sophomore
Suneil Peruvemba competed individually and finished 54th at 239 (+23).
The Dukes will conclude their regular season in Bridgeport, W.Va., at the Mountaineer Invitational on April 14-15 before competing in the Sun Belt Conference Championship in Madison, Miss., April 21-24.
