HARRISONBURG, Va. – With the bases loaded and one out in the bottom of the ninth, James Madison baseball sophomore
Kyle Langley hit a sacrifice fly to left field to walk off George Mason, 6-5, on Tuesday night at Veterans Memorial Park.
The Dukes improved to 10-19 on the year, while the Patriots fell to 17-12.
Seven Dukes registered hits during the night, as Langley had a pair of RBIs despite not recording a hit. Freshman
Adam Horvath earned his first career win with two innings of relief.
How It Happened
First Inning
George Mason jumped out to an early lead three batters into the game, using a single with runners on the corners to score the first run. A groundout three batters later made it 2-0.
The Dukes responded with three runs in the home half of the inning, scoring a run on two separate errors while also using a groundout to make it 3-2.
Fourth Inning
Senior
Eli Steadman added a run on a single the other way, scoring sophomore
Ike Schmidly to make it 4-2 after he reached on a single and made it to third base on a wild pitch and a groundout.
Fifth Inning
A two-out double from GMU cut the deficit to one at 4-3.
Seventh Inning
Once again, the Dukes pushed their lead to two, as Steadman led off the inning with a hit-by-pitch, stole second and moved to third on a failed pickoff attempt. He came across home to make it 5-3 off a sacrifice fly from junior
Wyatt Peifer.
Eighth Inning
The Patriots made it a one-run game on a groundout, making the score 5-4.
Ninth Inning
GMU tied the game with an unearned run, as a throw from third to senior
Coleman Calabrese off first base to lead off the inning. Back-to-back singles brought that runner home and made it a five-all game.
Pinch hitter
Corey Dowdell led off the bottom of the ninth for JMU, lacing a 3-2 pitch into center field. A hit-by-pitch and an intentional walk loaded the bases for Langley, who drove a pitch into left field to knock in the winning run on a sacrifice fly for a 6-5 win.
