LAFAYETTE, La. – James Madison women's tennis returned to the win column after capturing a key doubles point in a tiebreak and claiming courts four through six to down a shorthanded Louisiana squad, 4-1, on Sunday afternoon at Cajun Courts.
The Dukes (7-12, 5-4 Sun Belt) moved to 3-0 all-time against the Ragin' Cajuns (9-8, 2-6 Sun Belt), having won all three meetings since JMU's move to the Sun Belt Conference.
With Louisiana playing with just five players, the Dukes won the No. 3 doubles court and No. 6 singles court by forfeit.
However, UL wouldn't go down easy, as the doubles point would be decided in a thrilling tiebreak scenario. With JMU with an advantage due to a court-three default, the Cajuns won court one, as Angelique Berrat and Jenaila Prulla won the final three points of their tiebreak to down
Daria Munteanu and
Ines Oliveira, 7-6 (4).
On court two, the tiebreak was all knotted up at 5-5, but
Elena Kraleva and
Mia Savelic rattled off the final two points to defeat Nina Krecklenberg and Ana Martinez Vaquero, 7-6 (5), to secure the doubles point and a 1-0 lead for JMU.
JMU made an adjustment in the singles lineup, allowing
Corinna Rietmann to play on court five, and she made a quick impact.
With JMU leading 2-0 after UL defaulted court six, Rietmann dominated the first set before storming back from a 4-1 deficit in the second to upend Karolina Skowronska, 6-2, 6-4, for her first career win in a dual match.
Louisiana kept the match alive on court one, as Berrat snuck out a second-set tiebreak win to defeat Munteanu, 6-1, 7-6 (4).
The Dukes clinched the match on court four where
Sophie Williams cruised past Krecklenberg for a 6-2, 6-1 triumph.
JMU also neared victory on court three, as Oliveira led Martinez Vaquero, 6-4, 5-4. In a tight bout on court two, Prulla was just ahead of Kraleva, 7-5, 1-2.
JMU returns home on Friday, April 11 at 10 a.m. when it hosts Georgia Southern for Senior Day. The Dukes will honor their four seniors that morning,
Elena Kraleva,
Hope Moulin,
Ines Oliveira and
Alexandra Prudente.
