SAN MARCOS, Texas – A four-run first inning and a five-run sixth inning powered James Madison to a Sun Belt Conference baseball win over Texas State, 9-4, on Thursday night at Bobcat Ballpark.
The Dukes improved to 16-37 (9-19 SBC) while the Bobcats fell to 25-28 (13-15 SBC).
At the plate, sophomore
Kyle Langley led the way with a 3-for-4 performance, tying his career-high in hits. He added a walk, two runs scored and two RBIs. Redshirt junior
Tyler Muscar (2-3) earned the win with an inning of work, while junior
Brode Susce picked up the save behind 3.2 innings of scoreless relief and four strikeouts.
How It Happened
First Inning
The first four batters for the Dukes all recorded hits, as senior
Coleman Calabrese got on JMU on the board as he doubled in leadoff hitter
Ryan Dooley. Sophomore
Kyle Langley followed Calabrese with a two-run single and junior
Jack Cannizzaro capped the inning with a run-scoring single two batters later to make it 4-0.
Fifth Inning
With runners on the corner and one out, a grounder up the middle had the potential to be an inning-ending double play but a safe at first call kept the inning alive. After the call stood following a review, which allowed a run to score in the process, Chase Mora stepped up and hit a three-run homer to tie the game at four for Texas State.
Sixth Inning
The Dukes quickly responded by sending nine batters to the plate, scoring five runs to make it 9-4. Calabrese hit his second double of the game to regain the lead for JMU. After a Langley single, freshman
Reece Moody laced a single up the middle to plate both Calabrese and Langley. Junior
Maddux Fleck then hit a two-run double to push the lead to five.
