James Madison baseball has added Anthony Spataro as an assistant coach as Head Coach Marlin Ikenberry filled out his coaching staff on Friday morning. Spataro’s appointment will be effective on Sept. 1.
“We’re excited to have Anthony join the JMU baseball family,” said Ikenberry. “He brings a relentless recruiting background from multiple stops in his career, working under some of the best in college baseball. We look forward to having him as a part of this program and working with our position players.
Spataro joins the staff after spending the 2025 season with Mount St. Mary’s as its hitting coach. Under Spataro’s tutelage, the Mount had a pair of All-MAAC Rookie Team selections in Sam Grube and Nolan Book as the pair hit .293 and .326, respectively. The offense also set multiple records along the basepaths, stealing 181 to rank fourth in the country and break both the MAAC and program single-season records.
“I am extremely excited to be joining the JMU baseball family,” Spataro said. “I am honored to get to assist Coach Ikenberry and to work with and serve our players here at JMU! I cannot thank my family and my previous mentors enough for their support and belief in me throughout my coaching career! Go Dukes!”
Prior to the Mount, Spataro spent two seasons at Marist where the offense finished top five in the MAAC in six offensive categories in 2024 while having a Red Fox named to the All-MAAC First Team. In 2023, his first season with Marist, Bayram Hot was named MAAC Freshman of the Year and a freshman all-american. The Red Foxes set a program record in stolen bases with 120 while once against being in the top five of six offensive categories in the MAAC.
In 2022, Spataro was on an Army coaching staff that won both the Patriot League regular season and tournament crowns to earn a bid into NCAA Regionals. The entire starting infield was named to the Patriot League First Team, as Army totaled five first-team selections and a second team selection. The offense led the league in average, hits, doubles, walks, on-base percentage and stolen bases.
After getting his start in the coaching ranks at The College at Brockport for the 2016-17 season where six players were named All-SUNYAC, Spataro spent his longest tenure at Siena. He spent two seasons as a volunteer coach before moving up to a full-time assistant coach as well as recruiting coordinator for an additional two seasons. While at Siena, two players were named All-MAAC while three were named to the all-rookie team which included Siena’s first ever MAAC All-Rookie Team selection in 2019. During his first year at Siena in 2018, the defense set a program record for fielding percentage. In 2021, the team led the MAAC in stolen bases and was top five in three more categories.
Spataro earned a bachelor’s degree in kinesiology from The College of Brockport, graduating in 2017.
