James Madison baseball Head Coach Marlin Ikenberry has announced the hiring of Shane Halley as the program’s newest pitching coach on Sept. 18, 2024.
“We are very excited to have Shane and his family be a part of our JMU baseball family,” Ikenberry said. “He brings a wealth of knowledge having coached and played at the professional level and did an unbelievable job the last four years at Marymount. He’s been around some of the best in the business, and we are really excited for him to really help our pitching staff and be a part of this program.
Halley comes down to Harrisonburg after spending the past four seasons at Marymount, with the last three seasons of his tenure in the role of pitching coach and recruiting coordinator. In 2024, the Saints earned their first ever top-25 ranking and set the program record for wins in a season with 31. With an overall staff ERA of 3.42, Marymount had the fifth lowest mark in the country with three all-conference pitchers. Over the three-year stretch as pitching coach, Halley lowered the staff ERA by 35-percent and walks by 30-percent.
“It’s an incredible honor to join Coach Ikenberry and the JMU baseball family as the new pitching coach,” said Halley. “When you think JMU baseball, you think of a pitching staff that’s tough, competitive and hungry for success, and I’m thrilled to be a part of that. My wife and I are excited to continue our journey in Virginia, and I can’t wait to work with this talented group of pitchers.”
Prior to arriving at Marymount, Halley spent two years as a pitching coach in Nanjing, China where he helped develop the first Chinese pitchers to sign a professional contract with an MLB organization. He also spent time as an instructor at Prime Time Baseball LLC, providing instruction for athletes from the middle school, high school and college levels.
Ahead of going into the coaching ranks, he spent time in a pair of Major League Baseball organizations. He was drafted by the Kansas City Royals in the 20th round of the 2012 MLB Draft with the 613th overall pick before playing in the Colorado Rockies organization where he advanced up to the Triple-A level.
A two-way player in college, he spent four years playing for Virginia where he was a part of two ACC Championship teams and the first two appearances for UVA in the College World Series. He finished his career ranked third in winning percentage for the Cavaliers.
Halley holds a pair of bachelor’s degree, earning his first in foreign affairs from Virginia in 2012 before receiving his second in politics from Marymount in 2020. He also holds an M.B.A. from Marymount that he received in 2022.
