He set a JMU season record by averaging 25.7 points per game in 1978-79, a season during which he was the 10th-leading Division I scorer in the nation and during which he had 14 or more points in each of JMU's 26 games and 30 or more points eight times. He had a 59.8 percent shooting mark from the field and set team season records with 162 made free throws and 213 free throw attempts in 1978-79.
For his career he shot 53.4 percent from the field (803-1504) and 79.8 percent from the foul line (520-652), and his 76 career blocked shots remained among the top 10 totals in team history at the time of his induction.
Stielper averaged 20.9 points and 10.7 rebounds for a 17-9 team as a freshman in 1976-77, 16.8 points and 8.1 rebounds for an 18-8 team as a sophomore in 1977-78, 25.7 points and 8.4 rebounds for an 18-8 team as a junior in 1978-79 and 18.4 points and 8.1 rebounds for an 18-8 team as senior in 1979-80. He reached double figures in scoring in 98 of 104 career games, had 20 or more points 57 times, 30 or more points 10 times, and 40 or more points twice.
