FARMVILLE, Va., Oct. 25, 2006Â - The James Madison University men's golf team posted its third top five finish this year with a third place showing out of thirteen schools at the Poplar Hill Intercollegiate held from Oct. 23-24. The Dukes shot 310-308-313-931 on the par 72, 7,085 yard course, just six strokes back of Longwood who finished second shooting a three round total of 925. Kennesaw State won the tournament with a 304-293-314-911.
Individually the Dukes finished with three players in the top 20 and all five players finishing in the top 30 out of 62 competitors.
Senior Joe Scheffres (Rockville, Md./Landon Prep) led the way for the Dukes shooting 77-77-76-230 giving him a tie for ninth place. It is also Scheffres third top ten finish in fall play.
Senior Michael Chupka (Midlothian, Va./Clover Hill) had his best finish this season finishing 12th after carding an 80-77-77-234.
Freshman Michael Meisenzahl (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) was a stroke off the lead after the first round and earned his first top 20 finish with a tie for 15th after shooting a 76-76-84-236.
Sophomore Fielding Brewbaker (Salem, Va./Salem) improved his score every round to earn a tie for 22nd after carding an 84-78-77-239.
Junior Scott Marino (Fairfax, Va./W.T. Woodson) rounded out the Dukes finishing with a 77-83-83-243 to give him a tie for 27th.
Kris Shepherd of Kennesaw State won the tournament carding a 75-68-72-215.
The JMU men's golf team finishes its fall season at the ODU/Seascape Invitational on Oct. 30-31.
