UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa., October 1, 2007 -- Freshman Laura Mesa (Manizales, Columbia/Colegio Granadino) shot a final round 79 to finish in twelfth-place and the Dukes took fifth as a team in the Nittany Lion Invitational.
Madison shot rounds of 321, 313 and 320 for a total of 954 as the Dukes finished 44 strokes behind tournament champion Princeton. Rounding out the top-five were Maryland (925), host school Penn State (935) and Western Michigan (938).
Mesa opened the tournament with consecutive 77's to put her in eighth place after two-rounds. She shot a 79 today to finish in twelfth with a 233, ten strokes back of tournament champion Laura Bavaird of Western Michigan.
JMU placed four other participants in the top-52 overall including freshman Kelly Lynch (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) who finished in 20th (81-78-77--236). Other finishers for the Dukes were freshman Catrin Gunnarsson (Bankeryd, Sweden/Sanda Gymnasiet) in 29th (84-77-81--242), sophomore Mary Chamberlain in a tie for 35th (79-83-83--245) and senior Ashley Mantha (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) in 52nd (87-81-83--251).
The Dukes will return to the coarse in two weeks when the travel to Greensboro, N.C. for the UNCG/Starmount Fall Classic.
