PINEHURST, N.C., March 11, 2008 ? The JMU women's golf team shot 314 as a team on Tuesday to wrap up the third and final round of the Pinehurst Classic in 16th place. The Dukes posted rounds of 327 and 312 in the first two days to finish with a final score of 953.
Freshman Laura Mesa finished tied for 32nd after shooting 78 on Tuesday. Mesa had a team-low round of 76 on Monday and shot an 81 on Sunday to finish with a three-day total of 235.
Finishing just three strokes behind Mesa in a tie for 49th was sophomore Mary Chamberlain. Chamberlain posted rounds of 81, 79 and 78 to finish with a 238.
A pair of freshman, Kelly Lynch (83-79-80) and Catrin Gunnarsson (82-78-82), finished tied for 66th place after posting three-day totals of 242. Senior Ashley Mantha, who shot 78 on Tuesday and finished with a score of 254, rounded out the Dukes' five-person team. Mantha (91-85-78?254) finished in 105th.
East Carolina shot a tournament-low 295 on Tuesday to jump over East Tennessee State for first place. ECU (313-302-295) finished with a three-day total of 910 and won the tournament by 10 strokes. ETSU (307-304-309?920) came in second, followed by Augusta State (323-301-300?924) in third. Georgia State (318-309-300?927), Oregon State (321-303-303?924) and UNC Greensboro (313-307-307?924) finished in a tie for fourth.
The College of Charleston's Steffi Kirchmayr shot a 69 on Tuesday to claim the individual tournament championship. She finished with a total of 217 after shooting 73 and 75 in the first two rounds.
