WILLIAMSBURG, Va., March 23, 2008 ? The JMU women's golf team came back from a 10-stroke deficit to force a playoff in Sunday's final round of the First Market Bank Intercollegiate.
Whitney Wolejko hit a putt on the second playoff hole to seal the victory for Marshall University, which shot rounds of 305 and 327 to finish with a 632.
The Dukes shot 317 on Sunday and paired that with a 315 on Saturday to finish with a 632. Leading the JMU comeback was freshman Kelly Lynch, who finished second overall in the tournament. It was her third top-10 finish this season and the second time this year a JMU player has taken second in a tournament field. Sophomore Mary Chamberlain finished tied for second at the Lady Herd Fall Classic held Sept. 10-11 in Huntington, W.Va.
Lynch shot a career-low round of 73 on Saturday and followed that with a 77 on Sunday to finish with a 6-over-par 150. Her previous career-low was a 75 she shot at the Sea Trail Intercollegiate.
Lynch was followed by senior Ashley Mantha, who finished tied for 17th with a 160 through two rounds. She shot an 81 on Saturday and followed that up with a 79. It was her second top-20 finish this season.
The rest of the Dukes' five-person team was made up of Chamberlain (79-82?161) in a tie for 26th, freshman Laura Mesa (83-79?162) in a tie for 30th and freshman Catrin Gunnarsson (82-83?165) in a tie for 45th.
Trailing the Dukes and the Thundering Herd in the 20-team field were Bradley University (308-327?635) in third, Methodist (321-316?637) in fourth and Western Michigan (314-324?638).
