FARMVILLE, Va., April 1, 2008 -- The JMU women's golf team finished third out of 15 teams at Tina Barrett Longwood Invitational in Farmville, Va., Tuesday. The Dukes followed up Monday's round of 315 with a 313 on Tuesday to finish one stroke behind Longwood for second. It was the seventh time this season Madison has finished in the top five of a tournament.
Reigning Colonial Athletic Association women's Golfer of the Week, freshman Kelly Lynch finished in second place for the second consecutive week after conceding to Ball State's Brittany Kelly on the first play-off hole. Lynch tied a tournament record when she shot 74 in the tournament's second round Tuesday. She shot a 78 on Monday and tied Kelly for first after 36 holes with a two round total of 154.
Finishing in a tie for 13th for Madison was senior Ashley Mantha and sophomore Mary Chamberlain. Mantha shot rounds of 78 and 82 for a two-round total of 160. Chamberlain put in rounds of 81 and 79.
All five of the JMU golfers finished in the top 20 overall as freshmen Laura Mesa (81-79--161) tied for 17th and fellow freshman Kristen Harrington (78-84--162) tied for 20th.
Ball State shot a tournament record 308 on Monday and followed that up with a 314 on Tuesday for a two-day total of 322 to wrap up the team championship. They were followed by Longwood (316-311--627) in second, JMU in third, Charleston Southern (323-321--644) in fourth, with Radford (322-332--654) rounding out the top five.
