HARRISONBURG, Va., March 22, 2009 -- The James Madison men's tennis team picked up a non-conference victory on Sunday, defeating Norfolk State 4-2 in Harrisonburg.
The Dukes improved to 5-11 while dropping the Spartans to 2-5.
NSU jumped to an early 1-0 lead, taking the doubles point from Madison. The Spartans picked up wins at No. 1 and 3 doubles, while the Dukes got a victory at No. 2 from sophomore Jared Robinson (Johannesburg, South Africa/St. Stithians) and freshman Tommi Nissinen (Oulu, Finland/Kastellin Lukio).
JMU responded in singles play, taking four of the five matches. Nissinen led the way, defeating Petr Krakora 6-1, 6-3 for the point. JMU also got victories from senior Brian Rubenstein (East Hampton, N.Y./East Hampton), freshman Ville Maaranen (Joensuu, Finland/Joensuun lukio) and sophomore Yaroslav Voznenko (Kherson, Ukraine/Khercon Technical H.S.).
Next up for the Dukes is a home match against the University of Richmond on Saturday, March 28.
