CHARLESTON, S.C., Mar. 9, 2009 ? The James Madison University men's tennis team kicked off where it will play four games in six days with a 5-2 loss to The Citadel on Monday. The Dukes fell to 1-8 with the loss while the Bulldogs improved to 5-3.
After splitting the first two doubles match, The Citadel won the doubles point with an 8-2 win by Alberto Diaz and Derek Dickey over sophomore Matt King (Lorton, Va./Robinson) and freshman Ville Maaranen (Joensuu, Finland/Joensuun lukio).
Sophomore Jared Robinson (Johannesburg, South Africa/St. Stithians College) and senior Brian Rubenstein (East Hampton, N.Y./East Hampton) picked up JMU's doubles win with an 8-3 decision over Martin King and Joshua Cook.
In singles play, Madison got wins at No. 1 and No. 6 from Robinson and sophomore Yaroslav Voznenko (Kherson, Ukraine/Khescon Tech Lyceum). Robinson defeated Yufo Sutantio in No. 1 singles, winning 7-6, 6-4. Voznenko took a 6-2, 6-1 decision over Frederick Petrilli.
Madison will resume play later Monday afternoon, taking on Case Western Reserve University at 5 p.m.
