GREENVILLE, S.C., Sept. 20, 2009 - Nova Southeastern claimed the team title at the Lady Paladin Invitational after heavy rains caused the final round to be halted due to unplayable conditions on Sunday at the par-72, 6,199-yard Furman University Golf Course.
The cancellation of the third round gave the Sharks, leaders after Saturday's second round, a four-stroke victory over second place Campbell. Furman claimed third place and Stetson took fourth with East Tennessee State rounding out the top five.
JMU finished in 11th after carding a 322-315=637 through two rounds.
Sophomore Nicole Sakamoto (Honolulu, Haw./Kalani) led the way for the Dukes, finishing tied for sixth. Sakamoto shot an opening-round 78 on Friday before shooting a 73 on Saturday's for a total of 151.
Junior Catrin Gunnarsson (Bankeryd, Sweden/Sanda Gymnasiet) tied for 52nd after carding an 80-81=161. She was followed by sophomore Valentina Sanmiguel (Bogota, Colombia/Gimasio La Montana) after she carded an 80-82=162 to finish tied for 60th. Junior Mary Chamberlain (Dennis, Mass./Suffield Academy) tied for 69th after shooting an 83-81=164.
Junior Laura Mesa (Manizales, Colombia/Colegio Granadino) shot an 82-86=168 to round out the Madison's five-player team in 81st.
Nova Southeastern's Sandra Changkija claimed the tournament's individual championship shooting a 3-over-par 75-72=147 to beat out the field of 94. Furman's Stefanie Kenoyer (76-73=149) and Campbell's Mary Mattson (77-72=149) tied for second, followed by a fifth-place tie between Ket Premchuen (76-74=150) of Kennesaw State and Alex Buelow (77-73=150) of Stetson. East Tennessee State's Laura Jansone (73-78=151) tied with Sakamoto for sixth.
The Dukes return to the course Sept. 27-29 at the UNCG Starmount Invitational in Greensboro, N.C.
