RICHMOND, Va., April 15, 2011 - No. 45 VCU rallied to take the doubles point and won the final five singles matches to down James Madison 6-1 in a Colonial Athletic Association men's tennis match on Friday afternoon at the Thalhimer Tennis Center.
The Rams improved to 20-5 and will enter next week's CAA Men's Tennis Championship with a perfect 6-0 league record, while the Dukes dropped to 12-6 and 2-3 in conference play. The loss also ended JMU's six-match win streak.
Sophomore Greg Vladimirsky (Coral Springs, Fla./Broward Virtual) and junior Bertrand Moulin (Lyon, France/Aux Lazaristes Minimes (Wayne State)) gave JMU the early doubles advantage after the duo cruised to an 8-3 win at No. 1 against Jamie Vazquez and Camill Salomon.
VCU evened up the doubles score with an 8-5 decision favoring Antoine Baroz and Tim Johannsen over senior Matt King (Lorton, Va./Robinson (Old Dominion)) and sophomore Ryan Pool (Melbourne, Australia/Braemar (Chattanooga)) at No. 2.
The Rams clinched the doubles point and 1-0 lead when Flip Svensson and Max Wennakoski downed sophomore Florent Sentenac (Borderes, France/Lycee Theophile Gautier (Auburn Montgomery)) and senior Yaroslav Voznenko (Kherson, Ukraine/Kherson Technical) at No. 3.
In singles play, Sentenac tied the match at 1-1 with his 6-4, 6-2 victory against Vazquez at No. 3. VCU regained and never relinquished the lead when Svensson defeated King 6-2, 6-4 at No. 6.
The lead grew to 3-1 after Baroz won 6-4, 6-2 versus Pool at No. 4, and Johannsen sealed the team win for VCU with a 6-3, 6-2 victory against Vladimirsky at No. 1.
The Rams went up 5-1 with a 6-4, 7-6(3) win at No. 2 by Wennakoski over Moulin. Alejandro Argente closed out the match with a narrow 6-4, 6-7(3), 10-7 win against junior Jovan Milic (Belgrade, Serbia/Belgrade Sports School) at No. 5.
The Dukes return to action Sunday when they host Radford at 3 p.m. at Hillside Courts in the final regular-season dual match at home.
