GREENVILLE, N.C., February 26, 2012 - The James Madison men's tennis team defeated East Carolina 4-2 at the ECU Indoor Tennis Facility on Sunday. With the win JMU snapped a seven-match ECU home winning streak and improved to 3-2 overall while the Pirates fell to 8-4 on the season.
Madison got a jump start on the Pirates in No.1 doubles when the senior/junior pairing of Bertrand Moulin and Greg Vladimirsky downed ECU's Joran Vliegan and Nicolas Soriano 8-4. Juniors Ryan Pool and Florent Sentenac secured the doubles point, topping Niels Cleeren and David Masciorini 8-4. The Dukes faltered slightly in No. 3 doubles when senior Tommi Nissinen and junior Hugo Ramadier fell to John Schmitt and Patriek Wolterbeek in a tough 8-6 match.
Vladimirsky and Pool regained the momentum for the purple and gold, picking up wins in No.1 and No.2 singles, respectively. Vladimirsky and Pool both took down the opposition in straight sets, defeating Soriano 6-1, 6-0 in the top spot and Schmitt 6-4, 6-4 in the No. 2 position.
With the Dukes up 3-0 in the match, the Pirates began to make a push. Hugo Ramadier battled with ECU's Cleeren before falling in three sets, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4. Damien Brenard made it a one-point match, defeating JMU's Moulin, 6-4, 6-3 to put the match up for grabs.
Sentenac, however, secured the JMU win, defeating Masciorini in straight sets 6-4, 6-3 in the No. 5 singles position. In No.6 singles, Nissinen was leading Mario Martinez 5-2 when the match was called.
JMU returns to action when the host Lehigh on Friday, March 2 at 1 p.m. in the Dukes' home opener.
