ARLINGTON, Va., Mach 28, 2014 – James Madison women's tennis notched its fourth-straight victory and ninth of the season (9-3) as the Dukes came from behind to earn a 4-3 win over Georgetown (7-8) in a neutral-court match on Friday afternoon.
The Dukes and Hoyas started with singles play and split the points 3-3. Georgetown pushed its lead to 3-1 before Madison tallied three straight points.
Tied at 3-all, JMU closed play with a 3-0 doubles sweep of Georgetown to earn the first point of the day. Junior Taylor Pinchoff (Sylvan Lake, Mich./West Bloomfield) and freshman Alex Huie (The Woodlands, Texas/The Woodlands) opened by downing Liselot Koenen and Taylor Perz 8-4 for the win at No. 1 doubles.
Seniors Jacqueline Palmucci (Aurora, Colo./Cherokee Trail) and Ruxandra Andriescu (Brampton, Ontario, Canada/Turner Fenton) sealed the JMU victory as they downed Madeline Jaeger and Kelly Comolli 8-2 at No. 2 doubles. The duo earned their ninth straight win of the spring and 10th overall (10-2). Freshman Rachel Nelson (Big Prairie, Ohio/West Holmes) and sophomore Cara Wirth (Reading, Pa./Wilson) closed the day with an 8-5 win at No. 3 doubles over Victoire Saperstein and Sophie Panarese.
Singles action opened as Nelson fell 6-2, 6-4 to Jaeger at No. 3 singles to give the Hoyas a 1-0 lead. Huie scored the three-set win (6-3, 0-6, 6-1) over Comolli at the No. 2 position to tie the match at 1-1 before Georgetown retook the lead after Pinchoff was unable to overcome Saperstein at No. 1 singles, falling 6-2, 7-5.
Freshman Emily Bradshaw (Mississauga, Ontario, Canada/Blyth Academy) lost in straight 6-2 sets to Sophia Barnard at No. 4 singles as the Hoyas pulled ahead to a 3-1 lead. Andriescu won in two sets (6-3, 7-6) over Panarese at No. 5 singles, and Palmucci proved victorious in a three-set battle (6-3, 3-6, 6-3) with Koenen at No. 6 singles to tie the match at 3-3 heading into doubles action.
The Dukes return home for a Tuesday tilt against Colonial Athletic Association foe Delaware. Match play begins at 2:30 p.m. at Hillside Courts.
