CONWAY, S.C., March 9, 2014 - Playing for the first time in two weeks, the James Madison men's tennis team fell 7-0 at No. 68 Coastal Carolina at the Billy Nichols Tennis Center on Sunday.
The Chanticleers improved to 7-3 with their fourth win in ther last five matches. The Dukes dropped to 3-5, all on the road.
Sophomore Robert Stirling (Caboolture, Australia/St. Columbans College) was playing well against 67th-ranked Philipp Tsangaridis at No. 1 singles before retiring in the third set. Stirling took the lead with a 6-4 win in the first set, but Tsangaridis tied it up with a 6-3 win in the second set. Tsangaridis was leading 2-0 in the third set before Stirling retired.
Freshman Niels Kathol (Bonn, Germany/Collegium Josephinum Bonn) pushed his match to three sets before falling to Hunter Whalen at No. 6 singles. He dominated the first set with a 6-2 win, but fell 7-5, 10-5 in the final two sets.
The Dukes will continue their road trip in South Carolina with a pair of matches in Charleston. They will travel to play College of Charleston on Tuesday and then make the trip to The Citadel on Wednesday.
