ÂSIMPSONVILLE, Ky. – The James Madison women's golf team moved up one slot and finished fourth at the 2014 Cardinal Cup, Sept. 15-16. The two-day, 54-hole tournament, hosted by the University of Louisville, was played at the U of L Golf Club (Par 72 – 6,223 yards) in Simpsonville, Kentucky.
Entering the final round in fifth place, the Dukes recorded a 12-over 300 over the last 18 to finish with a 54-hole total of 37-over 901. Host Louisville shot a final-round 7-over 295 to card a 24-over 888 and take home the team title by six shots over runner-up Memphis at 30-over 894. Kennesaw State was third at 33-over 897, followed by JMU and Middle Tennessee State in fifth at 40-over 904.
Senior Shabril Brewer (Herndon, Va./Westfield) took the top spot for JMU with a 1-under 71 in the last round to tie for seventh at 6-over 222. It was her sixth career top-10 finish in a tournament and single round low so far this year, a round that included four birdies and three bogeys. Junior Kelsey Solan (Lumberton, N.J./Rancocas Valley) was next in a tie for 18th at 11-over 227 following a final-round 5-over 77. It was Solan's first collegiate top-20 placing and a career-low for 54 holes.
In her first college event, freshman Gabrielle Weiss (Southern Pines, N.C./Pinecrest) shot an 8-over 80 in the last 18 and tied for 22nd at 12-over 228, while fellow freshman Laura Gomez-Ruiz (Malaga, Spain)tied for 42nd at 17-over 233 after her 3-over 75 in the final round. Senior Maria Andrea Legaspi (Quezon City, Philippines/St. Paul College-Pasig) tied for 53rd with teammate and fellow senior Nikola Wessels(Muenster, Germany/Marienschule Muenster) as both finished at 20-over 236.
Danielle Lemek of Bradley took home medalist honors after a final-round 3-under 69 put her at 3-under 213 overall, four shots ahead of Memphis' Michaela Fletcher, who finished second at 1-over 217.
JMU returns to the course in two weeks, traveling to Greensboro, North Carolina, to play in the UNCG Forest Oaks Fall Classic, Mon.-Tue., Sept. 29-30. The two-day, 54-hole tournament will be played at Forest Oaks Golf Club.
