ANNAPOLIS, Md. – James Madison women's tennis blanked Navy 7-0 on Sunday afternoon as the Dukes opened the spring dual slate 2-0.
"Once again, this was a team performance," Head Coach James Brycestated. "Winning the doubles point definitely helped our confidence after yesterday. We will take a much needed day off tomorrow, and then get back to work Tuesday to make adjustments for next weekend."
JMU began with a 6-2 victory by senior Taylor Pinchoff(Sylvan Lake, Mich./West Bloomfield) and sophomore Rachel Nelson(Big Prairie, Ohio/West Holmes) at No. 2 doubles over Summer Ralston and Claudia Mackenzie to take a 1-0 lead for the doubles point. The Mids, however, tied doubles action at 1-1 with a 6-3 win by Noelle Kaufmann and Kristine Rojo over freshman Dylan Owens(Olney, Md./Sherwood) and sophomore Emily Bradshaw(Mississauga, Ontario, Canada/Blyth Academy) at No. 3 doubles.
The senior-sophomore tandem of Sarah Khan(Islamabad, Pakistan/Overseas Pakistani Foundation College (New Mexico)) and Rebecca Harris(Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Christian (Virginia Tech)) clinched the doubles point and a 1-0 JMU advantage with a 6-4 win at No. 1 doubles over Sam droop and Katie Porter.
Pinchoff made it a 2-0 match in favor of the Dukes with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Droop at the No. 1 position to start singles play. Freshman Kimmy Herrock(Tarpon Springs, Fla./East Lake) moved JMU to a 3-0 lead with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Allie Pavlansky at No. 5 singles.
Nelson clinched the match victory for the Dukes when she dropped Audrey Channell in two sets (6-2, 6-3). Harris followed with a come-from-behind, three-set win (3-6, 7-5, 10-7) over Kaufmann at No. 6 singles.
Owens tallied her own come-from-behind, three-set victory (1-6, 7-6(5), 10-5) at No. 4 singles against Amanda Keller. Khan rounded out the day and the 7-0 JMU win with a two-set victory (6-5, 6-4) at No. 3 singles.
JMU travels to Alexandria, Va., next weekend for a neutral-court match against Georgetown on Saturday, January 31 at 4 p.m.
