ORLANDO, Fla. – James Madison women's tennis won the first six points of the day en route to a 6-1 victory over Lehigh in Orlando, Fla., on Wednesday. The Dukes improved to 6-3 on the season.
"This was our first match outside this semester," Head Coach James Brycesaid. "We have had a good four days of training in the heat, and I was happy with our intensity level and commitment today. Tomorrow, we will look to improve again and keep our momentum going."
Sophomores Rachel Nelsonand Emily Bradshawopened the day with an 8-1 victory over Cassidy Cruz and Kirstin Godau at No. 3 doubles. The freshman-sophomore duo of Kimmy Herrockand Rebecca Harrisclinched the doubles point for the Dukes with an 8-2 win over Briana Maravich and Jessica Graham at No. 2 doubles.
Senior-sophomore tandem Taylor Pinchoffand Alex Huiecompleted the doubles sweep for JMU with an 8-1 win over Christina Auyeung and Jamie Campisi at the No. 1 position.
Huie carried the momentum into singles action, picking up a two-set victory (6-0, 6-3) over Maravich at No. 4 singles to give JMU a 2-0 lead. Harris followed with a two-set win (6-3, 6-2) over Abby Farrell at No. 6 singles.
Match point came at No. 5 singles, as Herrock took down Godau 6-1, 6-4.
Senior Sarah Khandefeated Cruz 6-2, 6-1 at No. 2 singles, which pushed the Dukes to a 5-0 advantage. Freshman Dylan Owensrounded out the JMU scoring with a 7-5, 6-4 win at No. 3 singles.
The Dukes continue their spring break swing through Florida on Thursday, March 12, with an 11 a.m. match against Bucknell in Winter Park, Fla.
