ELKTON, Md. – James Madison women's tennis rolled to a 6-1 victory over Delaware at Elkton Indoor Tennis Courts on Saturday night, snapping a three-match losing-streak.
The Dukes improved to 2-2 in Colonial Athletic Association matches and 9-6 overall while the Blue Hens fell to 0-1 in their league opener and 3-4 this spring.
JMU swept all three doubles matches for the opening point before winning the first five singles points.
"Today we battled against a solid Delaware team that continues to improve," Head Coach James Brycesaid. "We took control in doubles early, which was our goal. Then, in singles, we managed ourselves very well once we had the game plan in place. Now, we need to rest up and prepare for another CAA match tomorrow against Drexel."
Senior Taylor Pinchoffand sophomore Alex Huiedropped Arielle Shuren and Nataliya Naumova 8-1 at No. 1 doubles to give the Dukes a 1-0 lead towards the first point. Sophomores Rachel Nelsonand Emily Bradshawclinched that point with an 8-3 victory over Amanda Studnicki and Abby Martinez at No. 3 doubles.
Freshman Kimmy Herrockand sophomore Rebecca Harriscompleted the doubles sweep with an 8-6 victory over Denny LaMachia and Kim Milla at the No. 2 position.
Nelson opened singles competition with a two-set victory (6-0, 6-2) over Naumova at the No. 2 position, and Pinchoff followed with a two-set victory (6-2, 6-1) over Shuren at the No. 1 position to give JMU a 3-0 advantage.
Huie clinched match point for the Dukes at No. 4 singles, taking down Milla 6-4, 6-3. For the fifth point, freshman Dylan Owensposted a come-from-behind victory over LaMachia at No. 3 singles with back-to-back 6-1 wins in sets two and three after dropping the first set 6-1.
The final JMU point came at No. 5 singles when Harris secured a three-set win (3-6, 6-2, 5-2) over Christina Harrington when Harrington retired.
JMU returns to CAA action on Sunday afternoon with a trip to Drexel for a 2:30 p.m. match.
