WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Third-seeded James Madison downed sixth-seeded Towson, 4-1, in the 2016 Colonial Athletic Association quarterfinals on Friday.
A third-set victory by junior Dylan Owens at No. 5 singles clinched the win for the Dukes. Owens took the first set 6-2 before Sophie Lesage won the second 6-3. With match point on the line, Owens won the final three games of the third set for the victory.
Junior Rebecca Harrisgot the Dukes on the board with a two-set victory (6-2, 6-4) over Renate van Oorschodt at No. 6 singles, and she was quickly followed by freshman Emma Petersen's two-set win (6-4, 6-1) over A.J. Gomer at No. 4.
The Dukes pushed out to a 3-0 lead following junior Timea Guibe's 6-0, 7-5 win at No. 1 singles over Nicole Shakhnazarova. Towson, however, cut into the advantage with a 7-5, 6-4 win at No. 2 and sending singles at No. 3 and No. 5 to third sets.
JMU advances to the CAA semifinal for the fourth consecutive season. The Dukes will face second-seeded Elon at 2 p.m. on Saturday. The Phoenix came out on top 4-3 in a match during the regular season.
