HARRISONBURG, Va. – James Madison men's tennis opened the home portion of its schedule with a convincing 6-1 victory against Mary Washington on Sunday afternoon at Hillside Courts.

The Dukes improved to 2-3 this spring, while the Eagles fell to 1-1.

JMU swept doubles play while winning five of six singles bouts, with each singles win coming in straight sets.

Paul Mendoza quickly defeated Moses Hutchison and Rishi Charan Shankar, 6-1, on court one.

On court two, redshirt juniors
Alvaro Arce and
Gonzalo Adis secured the doubles point with a 6-2 win against Priyan Desilva and Andrew Watson. Freshman
Oscar Hernandez and redshirt sophomore
William Karpinski completed the sweep with a 6-3 triumph on court three over Cole Tecce and Peter Leese.

In singles play, JMU upped its lead to 2-0 with a dominant win on court four, as Hernandez took down Tecce, 6-1, 6-0. Koons made it a 3-0 match lead on court one, as he beat Hutchison by scores of 6-1, 6-2.

Karpinski clinched the match on court five, claiming a 6-3, 6-1 victory against Artis Hart to give the Dukes a 4-0 advantage. Mendoza followed suit on court three, dispatching Shankar with a 6-3, 6-2 win for JMU's fourth singles triumph.

Stefan Petrovic extended the lead to 6-0 with a 6-1, 7-6(4) victory against Leese on court six, while the Eagles claimed their lone point with a come-from-behind win on court two.

- It was the first singles win of the spring for both William Karpinski and Stefan Petrovic.
