This year, the NCAA hosted a virtual Career in Sports Forum May 26-28 that allowed selected student-athletes from various institutions an opportunity to learn about and explore careers in sports; specifically college athletics.
Carly Lyvers, from our JMU Women's Golf team attended this virtual program so she could acquire as much information and feedback from industry leaders to help her invest in a potential career in sports.
"Going into this forum, I was very nervous about what to expect. The event would normally be in-person, but due to Covid-19, it was virtual. I did not want to spend three days falling asleep in front of my camera. I committed myself to giving all my energy to the speakers and activities. From the beginning to the end of the event, I was captivated by all the speakers and everything they had to say." - Lyvers stated
At this event, there were notable guest speakers who have been deemed successful in the sports industry. They spoke on topics such as: professional development, practical approaches to the sports job search, personal branding, developing a career plan, and more to best prepare the attendees for their future.
"Personally, the most impactful speech was from Coach Yo, the Head Women's Basketball Coach at Ole Miss. I left her presentation feeling like I could run through a brick wall. She inspired me to find my mission and form my foundation for my life. Her motto was #NoCeilings, and like many other speakers at this event, their motto guided them through life." - Lyvers stated
"Through this forum, I met so many amazing people. I met many student-athletes from across the world and built connections.I gained 299 other friends who are just like me trying to figure out where we want to work and what we want to do. I am planning on connecting with the many sports industry professionals I met from the NBA, NFL, NCAA, and other sports organizations to help me pursue my goal of working in communications and public relations for a sports organization."- Lyvers stated
This opportunity was one for the books, but Lyvers was also able to expand her network and continue to take positive steps forward in the process of investing in her future career. Carly continues to put herself in the best positions to succeed as she also participated in the Student-Athlete Leadership Training Program June 17-18. This two-day immersive leadership training centered around the theme, "What is your Leadership DNA?" featuring transformative keynote speakers, virtual community service, significant small-group engagement with peers, and impactful curriculum for attending student-athletes.
"I wanted to learn more about my leadership style and how to collaborate with others that have different leadership styles."
When asked what her biggest takeaway from this experience was, Carly said, "How important it is to understand who I am. SALT taught me the sooner I am authentic, the happier I will be with where I start working."
Carly continually puts herself out there and takes advantage of the resources provided to her as a student-athlete. She encourages her student-athlete peers to do the same and take part in events such as these.
"I am eager to learn more and become the best leader and teammate I can be. I want to increase my knowledge of successful teams and what they do. I want to learn these things for my team at JMU, but also for the teams I will be a part of in my career." -Lyvers said
