LYNCHBURG, Va. - James Madison men's tennis began their spring slate of matches Friday with the first day of competition at the Liberty Spring Hidden Dual at the Liberty Indoor Tennis Center.
The day began with four doubles matches against conference foe College of Charleston, as the Dukes split those contests. The tandem of senior
William Karpinski and freshman
Edson Sanchez earned the first victory of the spring, pulling away for a 6-2 win against Andre Limon and Zac Larke.

Holden Koons and redshirt freshman
Youssef Sadek also came out on top with a decisive 6-1 victory over Robby Krick and Matias Gaedechens. The teams of sophomores

Mario Pena, as well as freshman
Mathieu Josserand and senior
Stefan Petrovic each fell in tiebreakers, at 7-6 (5) and 7-6 (7) respectively.
The Dukes and Cougars continued play into singles, winning five of eight matches.
Koons cruised to a 7-5, 6-2 victory against Larke at the top singles spot. Karpinski outlasted Krick in a super tiebreaker, winning by scores of 6-0, 1-6, 1-0 (11). Sadek rolled in straight-set fashion, taking a 6-2, 6-2 win from Gaedechens.
Hernandez also won in straight sets, with a 7-6 (6), 6-2 triumph over Johnny Wang, and Sanchez completed his 2-0 afternoon against Charleston with a 7-6 (4), 6-3 victory against Ben Husum for his first collegiate singles win. All three of JMU's singles setbacks to the Cougars came by way of a super tiebreaker.
JMU finished the day with a singles competition versus Youngstown State.
Koons, Karpinski, and Sadek each won in straight sets to complete their respective unbeaten days. Koons delivered a 7-5, 6-2 victory over Laurentiu Mandocescu. Karpinski outlasted Erik Gran, 6-3, 6-2, and Sadek continued his strong start for the Dukes, earning a 6-3, 6-1 win over Javi Pla.

The Dukes will complete the Liberty Spring Hidden Dual with day two action on Saturday, Jan. 15. First serve is set for 10 a.m. in Lynchburg.
