HARRISONBURG, Va. – James Madison women's tennis battled tough against a solid VCU squad but ultimately fell 4-1 on Saturday afternoon at the East Campus Tennis Courts.
The Rams improved to 8-1 on the year, while the Dukes fell to 2-5 this spring.
VCU opened the match with solid performances in doubles to gain the early 1-0 lead against JMU.
The team of Paola Diaz Delgado and Laura Astudillo took down the sister tandem of
Hope Moulin and
Kylie Moulin, 6-2, on court two for the early advantage. The Rams clinched the doubles point minutes later on court one with a 6-1 victory by Gabriela Davidescu and Shivani Manjanna against
Daniela Voloh and
Michelle Los Arcos.
In singles play,
Kylie Moulin bounced back in a huge way on court two, rolling to a 6-1, 6-1 win against Yelizaveta Karlova to even the match at 1-1.
The three other singles matches that went the distance were highly-contested from start to finish.
The Rams regained the lead on court one when Diaz Delgado slid past
Natalia Nikolopoulou in three set, at 6-3, 2-6, 6-1.
The VCU lead stretched to 3-1 after a back-and-forth battle between Nina Sorkin and
Hope Moulin, with Sorkin ultimately pulling out a 6-7 (5), 7-5, 6-3 win. In the first set, Moulin trailed 3-0 and 5-2 before mounting a huge comeback and taking the first set in a tiebreak. She led 5-4 in the second set before Sorkin reeled off three straight to force the third.
The Rams closed out the match on court four, as Davidescu snuck past Voloh, 6-4, 7-6 (3). The singles matches on court five with
Amanda Nord and on court six with Los Arcos went unfinished once VCU clinched the win.
